My fellow judges and I just finished the preface for the 2022 Yale Drama Series. It was the end of an enjoyable process that started a year ago with the reading of 1500+ plays from 56 countries. Congrats to Seayoung Yim for winning the prize, and to Jordan Ramirez Puckett, Lilly Camp, Matthew Paul Olmos, Candrice Jones, Libby Heily, Aaron Coleman, and Iraisa Ann Reilly for being on the shortlist.
I directed and edited a virtual staged reading of my play GRENADINE for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, Region 2, January, 2021, with student actors from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and SUNY Oswego recording themselves on their phones via Zoom. Poster design by Brittannie Travis.
We didn’t wind up having enough time to go into this much staging, but this is the video I put together to prepare for directing GRENADINE at KCACTF. The idea was to block the eight actors (who were filming themselves remotely) to create a single cohesive piece. (I didn’t know at the time what the cast would be, so I came up with a hypothetical list)
Costume designs by Brittannie Travis as part of the Collaborative Theatre Challenge for GRENADINE at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, Region 2, January, 2021. A group of dramaturgs and designers spent three days collaborating remotely on an original design for the play.
